Chapter Fifteen

“Terry not coming this time?” asked Gary when Tim strolled over.

“What do you think? C’mon, let’s go. Just me and you.”

Tim walked past Gary without even waiting for him or a reply and headed up the stairs to the outside world.

Gary took a deep breath and shook his head. “This is gonna be fun,” he muttered.

It was pouring with rain, and a stiff breeze was blowing which, although made the day cold and wet, they both preferred. Anything was better than the habitual stench of rot and decay and the swarms of flies.

Gary scanned the rooftops and for any zombies lurking in shop doorways or street corners and saw nothing. He wasn’t sure if he was glad or not. On the one hand, he wanted to get the job done as quick as possible and head back. Yet on the other, he was also terrified of them being attacked by another army of them. Tim was good with a weapon, but after what happened between him and Terry, he wasn’t so sure he could trust him.

Since the incident, neither of them had so much as mentioned it, either at the dinner table or in private, as far as he knew anyway. He certainly hadn’t heard any one else bring up the subject, and this was probably a good thing too. He had been pretty sure and horrified at the time that one or both of them were going to kill each other. Gary didn’t think he had it in him to aim his gun at them to separate them, and if he had, Tim would most likely have gone for him also. Tim, he was now seeing, seemed to be struggling mentally since his wife had been killed.

“So, what do you want to do?” asked Tim. “We can stand here all day and wait or go looking for them.”

“Umm, dunno, you’re in charge. Whatever you say.”

“For God’s sake, Gary, what’s up with you? Take a little responsibility for once. Show some initiative. Life’s all about making decisions, for good or bad, and sticking with them, but that don’t mean the person making them is a good decider of them. Get my point?”

“Yeah, I do. I just…you’re the ex-soldier. I’m just a lab technician. I figured you’re used to hunting down the enemy.”

“I am, but listen. Don’t ever put yourself down. You’re not just a lab technician. You’re a survivor, too, and I don’t see too many of them around. You might drink too much and talk shit occasionally, but right now, you’re one of the most important people in this country. Probably the world, too. Now, what do you want to do?”

A tingling sensation rushed to Gary’s head. He thought he could actually feel it swelling. No one had ever said anything remotely similar to him before. He’d spent the better of his life getting shitfaced on dope and alcohol, and most people regarded him as the one to exploit when a little fun was required. No one danced on bar tables or sang karaoke like he did after a few beers too many.
